Santa Catalina Convent
Monasterio of Santa CatalinaThe Monastery of Santa Catalina, it is at Santa Catalina 300, wins The most fascinating colonial religious building in Perú award, so even if you have overdosed on churches, you should try to see it. Actually, it is not a Monastery, as the name suggests, it is convent. Nor is it just a religious building , it is a good-sized complex of about 20,000 meters and covers an entire city block almost a city within a city.
There are two ways of visiting Santa Catalina. One is to wander around slowly, discovering the intricate architecture of the complex, getting slightly lost and then finding your way again, revisiting the areas you enjoyed the best. This is fun, but if you want to learn a lot about Santa Catalina, it s well worth hiring a guide. Ask when you enter and you will be given the next available one. Among them, they speak English, French, German and Italian and there are plans to add a Japanese speaking guide. The tours last about 90 minutes, and there is not set cost. A tip is appreciated and well deserved. You are welcome to wander around yourself afterward.
