Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days

The Tradicional Salkantay Trek, considered one of 50 unmissable treks worldwide, is a popular alternative to the Inca Trail, . This trek perfectly combines local culture and natural beauty. Salkantay (6264m / 20551ft) is the magnificent snowcapped mountain that was considered the God of the mountains, worshipped by the surrounding villages for thousands of years. This route will take us back to the time of the Incas, accompanied by the spirits of the other nearby mountains, Tucarhuay and Humantay, whose peak is higher than 5000 meters (16404 feet).

Day 1:  Cusco / Mollepata (Cruz Pata) / Soraypampa
The day will start with transport from Cuzco to the village of Mollepata – Cruzpata (3400m / 11155f), a place with a magnificent landscape of valleys, mountains, and the most important snow-covered mountain tops according to the ancient Incas, like Humantay (5217m / 17116f) and Salkantay (6264m / 20551f). Our camp will be at the foot of the Tucarhuay mountain, also known as Soraypampa (3700m / 12139f).

Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay pass – Challway
In the morning we tackle the most difficult part of the trail, ascending to the highest point of the trek, the Salkantay pass (4600m / 15092f). From here we will start our descent through tropical forests, “yunga”, observing the constantly changing ecosystems that we pass through, until we arrive at Challway (3000m / 9842f), our camp for the night.

Day 3: Challway – Wiñaypoco – Lucmabamba
A spectacular day descending through cloud forest, appreciating a wide variety of vegetation. We can see orchids, bromeliads, and much more. We will also meet some local families during the trek, in Wiñaypoco (2650m / 8694f) and Lucmabamba (2100m / 6890f), where our camp will be.

Hiking time: 6 hours
Climate: Warm during the day with mosquitoes, cold in the night.

Day 4: Lucmabamba – Llactapata – Machu Picchu village
Early morning start, ascending through the Inca Trail network to the archaeological complex of Llactapata (2650m / 8694f). Here we are still in the midst of cloud forest and will have an exceptional view towards Machu Picchu mountain, Waynapicchu mountain and the archaeological site of Machu Picchu. From here we descend to the Hydroelectric station (1950m / 6398f) from where we will take the train to Machu Picchu village (2050m / 6726f), where we will spend the night in a lodge.

Climate: Warm with a lot of mosquitoes.

Day 5: Machu Picchu village – Machu Picchu Sanctuary – Cusco
The lost city of the Incas is at its best in the early morning. After an early breakfast, we will take the bus to Machu Picchu (2400m / 7874f), where a professional guide will take us on a tour of the site, explaining the history, politics, ancient agricultural techniques, astronomy and religion that our ancestors left us in this wonderful city of the Incas. After the tour you’ll have enough free time to further explore the site on your own and take some of the short walks, before returning to Aguas Calientes to take the train back to Cusco (Cuzco). The climate in Machu Picchu (Machu Pichu) is warm with mosquitoes.

You should bring:

  • Your original passport must be shown at the entrance of Machu Picchu and if you wish you can have it stamped at the end of the trek.
  • International ISIC Card if you booked with this, it will also need to be shown at the entrance of Machupicchu.
  • Water bottle and sterilizing tablets.
  • A backpack with a change of clothes for 5 days.
  • Rain jacket (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco)
  • Flashlight and batteries. / Camera, films and batteries. / Strong footwear.
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleece and sweaters.
  • Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, etc.
  • Swimsuit (if you wish to visit the hot springs)
