Protests cost Peru $500 Thousand a Day
[ Jul 12, 2007 11:03:46 ] National Chamber of Tourism President, Daniel Ratti warned that proceeds coming from tourism will drop $500 thousand a day if 10 percent of the people that planned on coming to Peru, decide not to come because of strikes and protests.
Peru "receives $5 million a day because of tourism, and the impact of a 10 percent decrease in the number of tourists that plan on coming to Peru, would be half a million dollars a day, $15 million a month and $180 million a year," warned Ratti.
He also added that Peru should remember that two tourists are responsible for the creation of one job in the country and if protests continue, within the next 12 months there will be 200 thousand less tourists and 100 thousand less possible jobs.
Ratti pointed out that the regions in Peru which would most be affected by a drop in tourism would be Cusco, Puno and Arequipa - right where all of the protesting is taking place.
He explained that the 1,500 tourists which were not able to see Machu Picchu, returned to their countries and retold their experience. Thus causing 15 - 30 thousand potential visitors not to come.
"Our future is in Peru's tourism, our economic growth depends on tourism. That is what is first," Ratti told RPP News.
