Colca Canyon
Colca Canyon
There has been raging controversy over whether or not this is the world’s deepest canyon-current opinion is that the nearby Cotahuasi Canyon is deeper. The sections that you can see from the road on a standard guided tour are certainly very impressive but are not the deepest part of the canyon. To see the deepest sections, you have to make an overnight trip and hike. It certainly warrants a visit if you have the time. The deepest sections are reportedly 3400m deep.
The people living in the Colca Canyon region are known for their traditional clothing, especially the women’s clothes. (The women don’t particularly enjoy being photographed, ask permission.) Their dresses and jackets are beautifully embroidered, and their hats are distinctive. In the Chivay area at the east end of the Canyon, the white hats are usually woven from straw and are embellished with lace, sequins and badges. At the west end of the canyon, the hast are of cotton and are colorfully embroidered.
